Philippe Starck Sarapis Chair

November 19th, 2007

This offering by Philippe Starck in typical signature Starck style is seriously “stark” indeed. The Sarapis is minimalist philosophy personified in the flesh. Consisting of a 4 long long steel legs painted anthracite grey with a unadorned steel wire mesh seat and backrest, the design is Spartan to the max. No frills and no trills involved, just hard industrial design.

The one thing that draws my immediate attention is how disproportionate it looks. The length of the legs seem to be just plain too long when taken as a whole. The footrests are just tiny, of Lilliputian proportions. The seat is so bare that it looks like a sheet of metal (which it is, steel mesh in fact).

Nouvelle Vague by Christophe Pillet

The Novelle Vouge is another fantastic piece of furniture/art from Christophe Pillet. I simply cannot be more full of praise for him. His work blurs the line and constantly redefines the question, What is art ?

The free flowing shape expands the horizons of the mind into what is possible in the furniture design. The chair itself seems alive and organic. The sculptural curves hint at elegance, class, power and the colors whether in, ultra-glossy white, black or red just exude that touch of strength and industrial ‘rawness’ to it.

Style is nothing however without function. The Novelle Vouge passes with full marks on that aspect. The flexible thermoplastic bends gently when you put weight on it feeling so so good as you sink down onto the curves after a hard days work. The oval footrest is also great for storing magazines and books after reading. The Novelle Vouge, the perfect marriage between style and function.

Body to Body by Marco Maran

November 15th, 2007

In case you haven’t noticed, this blog aims to showcase the latest, the best , and the brightest of furniture designers and their works. We hope to bring relatively unknown designers to your attention , in the hope for a future of better taste. We not only show you the best in this blog, we also showcase the worst furniture known to man, ie, the previous post about the Fully Loaded Chair . Charles Darwin must have had a screw loose somewhere, if evolution worked, how did mankind end up with horrendous designers like that. Just looking at it is enough to make me lose my appetiate. But I shall perservere, I shall plough through the shit-storm of bad furniture and bring you the best..or the worst. Count on it, it’s our guarantee.

The Body to Body chair by Marco Maran is something that gladdens my heart. It gives me hope that there are still a few gems among the ashes, something that will save mankind from the horror of terrible furniture. It’s perfect as a outdoor bistro chair. Its resistant to UV rays, premature aging, extreme temperatures, from yellowing and losing its color. Heck, it is even fire resistant. No worries even if you spill your Flaming cocktail over it. Its fire resistant :P.

Fully Loaded Chairs by Alexander Reh, (soon to be deceased)

November 13th, 2007

(via YankoDesign)

I’ve seen some extreme designs in my time but this chair by Alexander Reh simply takes the cake.
Words fail me, I’ll let Alexander Reh do the talking.  Alexander Reh: “With over 400 12 guage shotgun shells, this chair truly comes Fully Loaded. The bright brass tips create a massaging texture on the top of the chair, much to the contary of their intended use.”

It is with much chagrin that I view this piece. This is simply design gone mad. Alexander Reh must have gone off the deep end when he conceptualized this piece. Fully Loaded is literally a sheet of plastic with 400 shotgun shells embedded in it. Does this make any sense to you ? It sure doesn’t to me.

Do (do-h) Chair by Reynold Rodriguez

November 11th, 2007

Reynold Rodriguez may not be a household name the way of Philippe Starck but he sure has a lot of talent under his sleve. The Do (do-h) Chair (what a name) is simply a fantastic piece of urban literature. Available in wood, and bloody red, its simply perfect for all your wine bar furniture needs.

Imagine…..

An unmarked door on a quiet street. You might never notice it unless you’ve been invited in by a select host of gentlemen who are the creme-de-la-creme of society. The kind of people who are richer then Bill Gates but are unknown because they want it that way, the kind who can put into power or overthrow governments in a heartbeat.

You knock quietly 3 times, and the doorman in a tuxedo steps out to invite you in and take your coat. Walking down the long passage way on the blood red carpet, you can sense the quiet clamor of voices in the distance as the movers and shakers of society converse and make their next move. Ever calculating, ever watchful.
