Konstantin Grcic - Chair_one

November 29th, 2007

Just the latest feather on the cap, Konstantin Grcic has produced yet another masterpiece simply called Chair-one. As always, he imparts his omnipresent style and quirkiness to his work. His style seems to tread the fine line between ‘ art’ and ‘junk’ but he somehow always manages to stay on the right side of the line.

The seat itself is die-cast aluminium with no upholstery whatsoever. Just bare bums on cool metal. I wonder how comfortable this seats are but it certainly hits the sweet spot on the design end. The base in the typical Konstantin Grcic style is certainly unconventional. In fact this is the first time I’ve seen a concrete base on a movable seat. One must wonder what would happen in a typical bar-fight and the aftermath of thrown chairs. The damage will be pretty severe to both the chair and the ‘hittee’.

Funkey by Mixko

November 25th, 2007

funkey.jpg

Custom made in the UK by Mixko, the Funkey stools are great fun yet classy enough to be used as a hotel chair. Mixko comprises the creative talents of Alex Garnett and Nahoko Koyama, a fusion of east and west giving only the best possible results.

Upon viewing this chair, a sudden eureka moment hit me, why has no one thought of this before ? Turning something we use on a daily basis, the computer keyboard into inspiration making the Funkey stool. The creative talents are even evident in the wordplay of the name Funkey as opposed to Funky, Funkey even makes sense in a roundabout kind of way.

Imagine sitting round a bar with the seats “Alt- F4” or maybe “Ctrl- Alt- Del”. What a conversation piece that’ll make: “Oh I just got deleted the other day” :P.

Sex-Fiction Lounge Chair Units

November 25th, 2007

14.jpg

This playful piece comes from the dynamic duo of Diego Fortunato and Gabriel Fontanilo. Constructed from polyester foam laid onto a aluminium frame with removable upholstery in a variety of colors. Male-to-female connectors enable a nearly infinate length using two chairs and as many ottomans as desired. Even as long as the great wall of China if you are so inclined.

When asked for their thoughts on the matter, they say “ The Sex-Fiction pieces of furniture fornicate just for pleasure, rather than reproduction, and, in doing so, they provide us with new uses.” Gosh, that was some statement coming from a guy with a head full of white hair and a hairdo reminiscent of Albert Einstein, the mad scientist hairstyle originale.

Barbarella Long Hair by Ross Lovegrove

November 23rd, 2007

Decadent luxury immediately comes to mind with the Barbarella Long Hair. Constructed from a meld of a plywood and beech frame, HR foam upholstery and authentic long-haired sheep skin, this is truly the ultimate in opulence, the most fantastic sofa you can own. Ever. This is one sofa I won’t mind saving up for but with one retailer quoting something in the range of £7362.25, it might be some time in coming.

The rich sheepskin just makes me want to roll around amidst all the fluff and soft hair. I’ll jump right in if given half a chance.  The textile feel leads to a variety of sensations starting with, “Whoa nice sofa” to “ahh so soft so smooth” when sat on and after a while it cumulates into a dream like daze, “warmmm, comfyy, I’m in my happy place, don’t disturb me unless the sky is about to fall down”.

(via YankoDesign)

The brain child of designer Hee-Woo Kim, the Takeoff Table is a completely new organism that takes on the guise of a simple metallic table. The simple exterior does not look astonishing, a plain industrial design with no bangs and whistles to show off. The beauty of his Hee-Woo Kim’s design is not the table per se but the concept behind it.

Hee-Woo Kim has completely reinvented the definition of a table with his great ideas. Previously, a table used to be regarded as something you put things on, or something which was nice to look at. However, this designer took on the view that a simple table had the power to change the mood, and this the Takeoff Table does.
